April 2002
At the back end of March and early April, Natzoid and I took a trip back to England to do some genealogical research. What was intended to be a holiday turned into a harsh regime of early mornings and late nights. In addition to seeing my family, we met up with the Gorner clan in Ashton. The 'reunion' brought together many far-flung descendents of John Gorner. People arrived from Washington State, Amsterdam, Northampton, Ashton and, of course, Minnesota. Gathering such a diverse set of individuals could have severely back-fired, but a genetic pre-disposition to Boddingtons and vino made the evening a resounding success. In fact, as one observer put it "I'm not sure we learned anything about the Gorners or genealogy, but we had a good night". The one digital photo we took at the get-together was of my distant cousins Dave and Sarah Gorner. As soon as we have the film developed, I'll scan the photos.
The journey was quite the effort. First we drove six hours from Minnesota to Natzoid's parents' in the Quad Cities. There we deposited dogs and kids. We then drove three hours from QC to Chicago O'Hare. We flew cattle class with British Midland directly from O'Hare to Manchester. It has been nearly three years since I flew in cattle class (I usually use my airmiles to upgrade) and the experience was not pleasant. Sitting with your legs wrapped around your neck surrounded by screaming kids and nauseous adults is the dictionary definition of discomfort.
Spring has finally sprung here in Permafrost, Minnesota. The weekend has been spent in the garden and various nurseries. The barbecue has been liberated from the shed and gardening tools litter the yard. My birthday present from Natzoid and the kids is a beautiful little gardening table:
I have planted Lavetera, Clemetis, Night Scented Stock, Hollyhocks, Morning Glory and Asters. I spent Saturday afternoon digging Natzoid's vegetable garden. She has planted onions, garlic, horse-radish, asparagus, carrots, cucumbers, brocolli and all manner of other vegetables. Not much to see at the moment, but stay tuned.
Whilst at the nursery, we bought Beanie some toy gardening tools. She loves being in the garden and sleeps well as a result.
Of course, we couldn't leave out Samantha, so she acquired a plant of her own...
Whilst enjoying a glass of red yesterday evening, I felt the urge to take a photo of the maple tree in the twilight. I now know why.
And just because she is so beautiful...
