National frenzy imminent http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149429574 http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149429574 Sun, 04 Jun 2006 14:59:34 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1149429574
In a prelude to getting stuck into banjos, cow's arses and Owen-bashing, I have to say that England looked like they had seen a football before yesterday afternoon. I can't comment on much more than that since I was a tad on the dizzy side. I had set out to buy some cigarettes. However, fate conspired against me. As I was walking to the shop, I bumped into an old girlfriend of mine that I haven't seen in probably 15 years. We exchanged pleasantries, had a quick catch up and then my phone went. One of t'lads was on the of the non-existent wire asking whether I fancied a pint while watching the England match. Mais oui!

I think we're in for a few upsets this year. Specifically, the former laughing stocks of the World Cup, the USA and Australia, might be a more tenable force in Germany. The US have come on in leaps and bounds over the past ten years or so, and I suspect they could emerge and surprise everyone (except me) by coming at the top of group E. If they don't, they will certainly be second. This puts them in a second round game against what I predict will be Brazil or Australia. If the latter, the US have a virtual bye to the quarter finals, where I think they will meet South Korea. After that, it's the big boys, but you never know.

The country is bedecked in red and white. I'm ashamed to say I haven't purchased an England shirt and probably won't before pay-day, by which time we could be out of the Cup anyway. I am, however, sporting a fine Oddies England 2006 T-shirt. A fashion icon, I am not.

Travel grinds http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149327344 http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149327344 Sat, 03 Jun 2006 10:35:44 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1149327344
I've been a bit clever in the migration, learning from mistakes I made when I started the old site. Firstly, bots are rejected. Secondly, no references to my surname (there are still links to the old domain but I will sort those over the weekend at some point).

I'm due to be in hell Darn Sarf Wednesday to Friday next week, which will mean no internet access in the evening. Bummer. What did people do before the t'interweb? Ah yes, they spoke to other people in social environments. Shudder. Looks like I'll be getting au fait with crap TV again. I was meant to be meeting up with an old Uni friend of mine in London on Thursday evening but I have sent the last of my spare (non-train-fare) cash to Natzoid, so that might be a non-starter. Bugger.

So what are my plans for the glorious weekend? Nada. The only guarantee is that it will inevitably involve a crossword or two. It's all go around here you know, not. It's like treading water waiting for a lifeboat.

More later.

Quick update http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149162851 http://www.gorners.com/june_2006.php#1149162851 Thu, 01 Jun 2006 12:54:11 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1149162851
In other news, the new domain is registered and I have started the porting process. All bloggage will be transfered there in the next few days. Those who emailed for an updated address should get one in the next couple of days.

Oh, and I have some terribly exciting news that I cannot speak of, on pain of death. Rest assured, dear lurkers, all will be revealed come the day of joy or pain.

The ultimate Jihadi Chav experience http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148921951 http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148921951 Mon, 29 May 2006 17:59:11 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1148921951
My father had heard third-hand (at least) that there was an old mill in Atherton that sold such things on the cheap. For those who know the area, it is opposite the new police station just on the outskirts of local beauty spot (sic) Hag Fold. The police station in itself is worth commenting upon. It looks more like a mosque than a law enforcement building. It has a big dome, minarets and someone warbles from it five times a day (okay, that last bit is an outright untruth). They should rename Flapper Fold Lane to Bin Laden Square.

Anyway, opposite it is "The Factory Outlet". It is dirt cheap. And amidst all the tat, there are some gems.

For your chavs, virtually every make of shell-suit trackie bottoms is available. Get your St George deck-chair while stocks last. Want to wear shorts that make your arse look like it terminates at knee-height? TFO is where to go. Tired of tasteful Tshirts? Get one with "Who ate all the pies?" blazened across the front. You all DKNY? TFO is the place for you.

For your Jichavis, why not combine that shell suit and burberry scarf with a nice Ben Sherman rucksack. Ideal for the struggle. Need fuse wire or fertilizer? TFO it must be.

That said, look what I got:

One dress shirt (for an upcoming wedding), originally marked at £72 in Marks and Sparks - £10.
One Kappa fleece - £5
One Nike sweatshirt - £5
One belt - £2.00
One umbrella (to replace Arkwright) - £2.50
One tie (amazingly the same pattern as my old favorite one -- again M&S) - £1.50

For those of you in the US, for all intents and purposes, you pay £1 here for what you would pay $1 for there. So you could say it was $26.

No damned shoes though! I ended up having call into the hotbed of geopolitical savoire faire, Leigh, where a pair of Adidas trainers cost me £10, and probably nearly my life. I tell you, this side of Manchester makes the words Western Civilization seem an oxymoron.

I put this here as a note to myself that beggars can't be choosers and that if I ever decided to blow myself up, I know I can do it on the cheap.

Blips and 403s for the weekend sir? http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148899338 http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148899338 Mon, 29 May 2006 11:42:18 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1148899338
I emailed the fine people at Host Rocket, who were excellent as usual and unsuspended the account. There was a glitch for about 24 hours that meant everyone was 403'd, but we are now back up and running.

On Wednesday this week, I will be obtaining my new domain and starting to migrate El Bloggo from here to there. I even know the domain name if no bugger half-inches it between now and then. All those who have emailed me will be informed as a matter of course once the migration is complete. On that subject, I have been astonished as to the various peeps who have emailed. Some are people I know. Some are people I have never heard of. Although there is a common theme amongst them; they all seem to be really decent people -- which in itself is surprising given my pre-disposition for swathing generalisations and dogged opinions (usually based on nothing more than the mantra that Kenny is right -- I should tell you a small storylet about that but I will save that for another day). Thanks to all of you who continue to read my blather.

I am now back in the eighties. Utah Saints!

And since when did I think listening to Suzanne Vega was a good idea?

"Best of"'s await purchase.

Gourmet discovery http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148499698 http://www.gorners.com/may_2006.php#1148499698 Wed, 24 May 2006 20:41:38 +0100 http://blog.gorners.com/ShowComments.php?id=1148499698
Take a chicken and mushroom pie and warm it. Slice a panini and butter it. Place pie inside panini, sprinkle with cheese and toast until the panini has gone slightly crispy. I only went in for a pea and ham panini but there were no mushy peas, so I got creative. You should have seen the looks of disgust.

It kind of reminds of my staple diet at Uni. That was to grill some bacon, heat one of the bread things people use for kebabs in England (shut up -- listen I'm tired out -- you're lucky I can type) -- aha pitta bread (ya boo etc), and then stick in grated cheese and the piping hot bacon. It all melts into a fusion of goodness. Eat with an accompanying cheap white Bordeaux. Try smarties as a dessert.

After the pie panini, I had jam and coconut sponge with custard. And I will annoy all the female readers by saying that I cannot put on even one damned pound of weight. Maybe I should be eating steak and kidney pie paninis?
